We read that Globalization is the word used to describe the growing interdependence of the world’s economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by cross-border trade in goods and services, technology, and flows of investment, people, and information. Countries have built economic partnerships to facilitate these movements over many centuries. But the term gained popularity after the Cold War in the early 1990s, as these cooperative arrangements shaped modern everyday life.
All this should include a very close exchange of information on any sphere of life. But has globalization produced a harmonious coming together for the good of the world? Hardly! Unfortunately the world is as divided as ever if not more, capital gains and profit being the name of the game, while Capitalism is rampant.
As for peace in the world, the United Nations, just to give an example, are an utter disgrace with their system of vetoes by the big powers, making it impossible to arrive at resolution to cure most of the human tragedies in the world, indirectly cause by the interference by the very same big powers. And what about cooperation in the field of medicine in the event, as it’s the case now, of the current killer epidemic.
Why all the top brains in this world are not seriously coming together to expedite the finding of a vaccine against coronavirus? One of the most frustrating aspects of this epidemic is not only the fast spreading of the virus, or the ever increasing number of deaths which is posed to reach biblical scale by the time this kind of plague is over, but it is the notion that for a vaccine, as we have been told, we will have to wait one year to one year and a half. There have been times as the first and the second world wars when the warring powers produced in a very short space of time better lethal weaponry to kill and yet we might wait long enough to see half the earth population been decimated before we find a way to save lives. With due respect to those scientists at work now on a coronavirus one has the sneaky suspect that if there were total mobilization of the best brains in the world a vaccine against this latest killer virus would be found much sooner.
